Master Class – Eusebius of Caesarea

Unforgetful Forever

The Ethics of Memory in Eusebius of Caesarea

A Master Class for students and faculty with Sister Theotokos Adams

Wednesday, February 8, 2023
10 am – 12 pm Brunch will be provided.

The intellectual itinerary of Eusebius of Caesarea centers on our relation to the past – be it collective or individual. While works like the Chronicon and the Ecclesiastical History are explicitly historical in nature, his lesser known liturgical and apologetical texts reveal how Eusebius viewed the ethics of memory for the present and the future. This event will provide a close reading of selected passages from the Praeparatio evangelica, the Demonstratio evangelica, and his post-Nicene paschal treatise De solemnitate Paschali. Short texts from Origen, John Chrysostom and Maximus the Confessor will further inform our discussion.

Event is free, but please register here!

Sister Maria Theotokos Adams, SSVM, PhD is currently a Research Associate for the Department of Greek and Latin of the Catholic University of America working on the Eusebian Gospel Canons. Her doctoral dissertation at CUA (Church History, 2022) was on Pascha as historical and liturgical time in Eusebius of Caesarea.
