The search for that most elusive of divine and human qualities – wisdom – has occupied the minds of thinkers from time immemorial. Among twentieth century Eastern Christian, the quest for Divine Wisdom became an absorbing and sometimes controversial pursuit. Three Russian thinkers stand out in this regard: Vladimir Solovyov, Sergei Bulgakov, and Pavel Florensky. The writing of these three men have been pored over by scholars for years. But alongside the Russian sophiologists there stands the figure of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church for nearly the entire first half of the twentieth century, activist, saint and devoted seeker of God’s Wisdom. His prayer or Divine Wisdom is often reprinted in Ukrainian prayer books, and his personal devotion Divine Wisdom is well known, but there has yet to be a full study of the different meanings that Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky attached to the word “wisdom”. It is at the same time a Divine attribute, a Hypostasis of the Holy Triad, a gift of the Holy Spirit, a human virtue, and much more.
Metropolitan Andrey held that there was some sort of special kinship between Divine and human wisdom, which was involved in the process of salvation, in the divinisation of the human person. There are indications that he no only dwelled in thought and word on the subject of the Wisdom of God, but that he experienced this Wisdom mystically.
This volume examines the preoccupation of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky with Divine Wisdom and attempts to distill some systematic ordering of his ideas on the subject, both in his magnum opus, The Wisdom of God, and in various brief references to Sophia. It studies is sophiological musings in comparison with those of the Fathers, medieval scholastics, and his Russian contemporaries.
